The 4 cylinder model will be just fine for the way you will be using it. Just do like the other poster said and get a carfax report on it before you buy it. You should also take it to a mechanic to get it checked out. Carfax can't tell you if a vehicle has been properly maintained or not.

Sounds like a good deal. Just don't forget to run a carfax report at http://www.carfax.com/ before you buy. This will tell you if it has had any major problems. All they need to run it is the VIN number.
Enjoy.

A nice low mile TJ ???? If ya don't want it let me know.! There's nothing wrong with the four cyl. for what your going to do with it. If the bug bites you later to install a lift and bigger tires then drop in a bigger engine or use a power adder. I used a jeep commanche {small pickup} with the same engine as yours to pull back a 6600 lb. full size p.u. in 100* temps 450 miles a few years ago. it didn't go 80mph but it did fine at 55. Buy it and enjoy it.

Four cylinder is a reliable engine and for what you are intending to use if for it should be great and easier on the gas wallet.
Oh,,Yes, Politically correct or not..Merry Christmas to you.

i drove a few of the 4 cylinder jeeps and they were ok but the really lacked in performance. They are reliable and cheap to maintain though. If you are going to baby it it should work for you then, but you should drive it a little to see if you like it as they are not too peppy.

I love jeeps, but unless you are planning on some serious off roading i wouldnt go for one with a lift. Just the regular stock suspension on a jeep is good enough to get you through the snow in winter and to do some basic off roading. Since you are saying as a daily driver a lift is something you really wouldnt need.
Problem with lift kits is that unless they are done right the vehicle might ride like crap. Parts might wear out faster. now if it has been lifted right by someone who knows what they are doing you probably wouldnt have any problems with it. If you do decide to go with this jeep just test drive it quite a while, try to feel for any unusual vibrations and to see if it rides smoothly. Get it checked out good by a 3rd party. Make certain they go over the suspension well.
Also larger tires and lift kits will make it use more gas.

I would say the 4
if you are only using it on the beach, as a second car, and do not plan to tow anything, a 4 will be great, especially since it's a jeep.. a great 4 wd car.

good luck!

Jeeps are great. Installing a toneu cover on my 82 cj yesterday. Have the 258 six but dont tow a lot because of the short wheel base. Will pull the jet ski down to the river but only 12 miles on the back road and no high speeds. There is nothing wrong with a 4. I have a toyota truck with a 4 and I will hook up to my 22 ft sailboat and pull on the freeway to my destination. Any motor will be fine as long as you take care of it. Jeeps are fun and you can get many different tops for your enviroment. Here in south louisiana I am still sporting the bimini top for the weather here has been warm. Good luck.

Unless you like sliding all over the hills when their muddy or getting stuck on muddy trails i'd forget the BFG's ,,, Their way overpriced for one and they fill up with mud and act like your on ice .... Go for a mud terrain that actually works in the mud.... Hancook Dynapro MT's are fairly new to the market and are great in sand snow and mud and you won't have to empty your bank acct . for them... Super swampers are awesome but your gas mileage will suffer if you do a lot of highway in it ... unless you don't care like everyone in my house .... We have 5 Jeeps here and all have Great MT's on all of them.... BFG's are good for the street or a little offroading with no mud around ... On a real trail you'll need a winch with these tires .... Good luck & happy Jeepin

I found some 33x12.5x15 Aurora 02 muds at an independent tire dealer. $90 each, mounted and balanced. They have the same lug pattern as the BFG muds that were going for $145 a pop. I'd suggest shopping around. I've seen BFG A/Ts (31x9.5x15) as low as $100 each, which are OK in the mud and very good on the road. I have the Auroras on my YJ and the BFG A/Ts on my XJ.

i would say anywhere between 500 to 1200 bucks. it depends what brand you are going with. if you dont want to spend a lot i would look at Maxxis Buckshots. they are a good tire and for a m/t they wear decent

The BFG Mud Terrain and All Terrains are long lasting tires with good performance. I have 35k miles on my ATs and they are still at 11/32nds.
Some of the other tires wear quickly so you need to determine what your situation is: Cheap tires now and not worried 2 year down the line, or Good tires that will last. If your thinking of increasing size with a lift later, than go cheap and wear them out. If you don't want to spend 600 or 700 bucks in a couple years and you will stay the same size, go with quality. One other thing, even if you want to upgrade in a couple years, BFG Mud Terrains are always a hot seller in the used tire market.

For an all around good tire you can't beat the BF Goodrich KO. Check them out and talk to someone in your area that has a set. I have had mine for about a year and think they are the best tire for all around use. I have had them off road and on long trips and am very impressed. They grip well in all types of weather and are not too noisy on the highway.

I have a TJ wrangler with the works, and if I was you I would look hard at deciding tires. Quality and price... Personally I like the superswamper IROK. But these are expensive!

If your checkbook is small, like mine was when I first bought my jeep as the payments were 400, put some wild country RVTs on it. You will be very happy with the cost and the performance! Good luck, and get a pair of American Racing rimes to go with it.

All tires have a tread-wear rating..so do some research on that. Are you really planning on snow and mud travel? Snow and mud tires are louder on the road...and tend to be softer and tend to wear sooner than road tires. If you are buying 4 new ones...you are lucky if you can get away with a $500 bill. You don't just pay for the tire..you have mount and balance etc charge. If you are looking for just one..you can call around for a used tire if you hurting for cash.
God Bless you,
Teresphere

The TJ is the wrangler from years 1996-2006 the JK is the newer model jeep from 2007 on. If your going to get a TJ there is a few different models. If you plan on lifting or offroading it anytime soon I would consider the rubicon, sport or sehara models, because they have different gear ratios in the axles so you can run bigger tires easier. With the X model the biggest size tire you can run is a 31 and that's pushing it a bit. Im sure the same is true with the JK models as well, but I would look into it to be sure.

I had a cracked manifold on my old 98 TJ. It cost about $500 to have a local, honest mechanic replace it with a factory-original new one.

How many miles are on the Jeep? The exhaust system has a crazy-long warranty, like 10 years/100k miles or something like that. Check with a dealership first, it might just be covered.

Regarding Jeep/Mopar replacement exhaust manifolds: The exhaust manifold on older TJ's, as well as YJ's (square headlight Wranglers) with a 4.0L engine is prone to cracking, as others have said. However, a few years ago, Jeep redesigned their factory manifold with a bellows in it to alleviate the cracking issues. You can argue for or against an aftermarket manifold, but don't rule out a Mopar replacement unit.

Why are you only looking at gas hogs? From your list, I'm guessing you like to venture off road from time to time, but all of those vehicles will be expensive - very much so while you continue to drive 100 miles a day.

You should consider buying a new car that's efficient (Civic, Corolla, something like that) for your commuting, then maybe get a used Jeep or something for your weekend jaunts. You could easily do this for less than the price of a 4Runner.

As for the lease vs buy question - generally leasing is more expensive in the long run - the only way they are good for you is if you hit the mileage almost exactly. If you go over, they overcharge you for the difference, and if you go under - well now you paid for miles you didn't use. If you decided to go with a two vehicle solution that might work for you since you could use the 4x4 when needed to keep your leased vehicles miles in check.

More to think about!

Hey congrats on graduating! Its okay to not have money to put down depending on your credit you might not have to anyway. Especially with most of the vehichles you just named have factory incentives that can be used in place of a downpayment. You should probably buy for the following reasons. Leasing a car means you own nothing, also most leases have a mileage allowance which you would probably go over because average people drive 11,000 miles a year you would do that in six monthes. On a lease if you go over the mile allowance its usually .20 a mile which adds up. Leasing is great if you want to own a bmw or lexus or audi because outright buying those cars is stupid. Anyway hope I was some help best of luck to you!
